We tried Iwa Ya more than a year ago. At that time I'd gave it 3 stars and chalked it off as another Chinese-run Japanese place. Since the Covid-19 situation, many of our familiar choices were closed, so we tried Iwa Ya again. To our surprise, the quality of several items have markedly improved. I've also get to know the staff and impressed by their helpful attitude and earnesty. The free tofu and red beans soup certainly don't hurt. They even provide soup container for you to take the soups home for to go orders
Friendly and attentive staff even though drinks, soups, and tea, are self-serve. We've been there several times but have only ordered from the appetizer, sushi, rolls, and hand rolls section. Sushi and hand rolls (not the specialty rolls) are inexpensive. Fish is fresh and nice quality. We have seen other tables with entrees and noodle soups and looks like large portions. Soups are free. Corn soup is very tasty. Miso is the other free soup. Hot tea tastes like it's barley tea, which is tasty. Hot dessert is also free, red bean dessert--tasty too.
Quality is hit or miss. More Chinese style than Japanese. Hope the can improve quality and it will be worth one more star
I was surprised about this place. It looks small from the outside. Once you walk in, you're greeted with families enjoying a meal together. The don bowls were extremely delicious and authentic. May have to stop here again.
